UUM ONLINE: More than 100 participants took part in the Innovative Research, Invention and Application (I-RIA) 2016, a two-day expo organised by the School of Computing (SoC), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
The participants are made up of students from 10 universities including UUM and a number of secondary schools specifically Sekolah Menengah Agama Kedah, Sekolah Menengah Agama Perlis, Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Mersing and a primary school i.e. Sekolah Kebangsaan Oran, Kangar, Perlis
The Dean of SOC, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huda Hj. Ibrahim said, I-RIA 2016 project focusses on innovative problem-solving products.
"These products have a lot to do with the environment, health, education and the community. The participants hope to address some day-to-day problems,” she added.
The participants comprises of students from various educational levels including undergraduate and postgraduate students with a range of projects which include the final year project for undergraduate students or research grants for postgraduates.
I-RIA 2016 received good response from participants compared to the previous year and SOC hopes to attract more participants from all institutions of higher education in Malaysia in the forthcoming years.
The launching ceremony of I-RIA 2016 was officiated by the Chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM), Prof Dato' Seri Dr. Halim Shafie, who is also the Adjunct Professor of UUM. The ceremony was held at the Auditorium of Sultanah Bahiyah Library.
Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Halim Shafie delivered a keynote address entitled Building the Innovative Organization. He also took the opportunity to visit the I-RIA 2016 exhibition booths.
At the prize giving and closing ceremony, a product, 3 Wheels Motorcycle For Person with Disabilities, by Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), won the Best Innovation (undergraduate and diploma) and the Best Innovation champion for the secondary school category went to SMK Agama Kedah with their product called C’Cure.
Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) won the Best Research for their research entitled Complex Neural Computation Algorithm Based on Multiple Digital Neurons and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM) won the Best Poster category for the Wildlife Surveillance System to Prevent from Poaching. Sek. Keb. Oran was awarded the Young Innovation Award for their Antidrops product.
The prizes were presented by UUM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Malek Abdul Karim.
I-RIA 2016 is an exhibition of research, invention and development of innovative applications that showcases innovative projects in various categories for instance Computer Engineering, Programming and Computer Science, and ICT applications from institutions of higher education in Malaysia and the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT).
Besides the exhibition, an experience sharing session entitled How to Innovate Research? was also conducted by Prof. Dr. Zulikha Jamaludin.
The SOC Dean’s Award ceremony was also held on the same day.
